Venice, Italy is world-renowned for its festivals, especially those surrounding the Carnevale. This year the festivities began on February 8, 2020, but they are still going strong. For this author, the most interesting might just be happening February 20th through the 22nd, Thursday through Saturday. In St. Mark’s Square, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., competitors will present their costumes and masks. Winners will be announced on Sunday.

While costumed, you might as well attend one of the costumed dinners and balls. There’s a charge for these, of course, but you can check with your hotel to see what is still available should you be able to attend.

Dear Renee
we have been twice at Venice for the Carnevale. It’s amazing all these sophisticated masks. Our dear Master is born in Cologne and therefore he likes Karneval very much. Today, the hight time of Karneval is starting in the Rhineland, a week later in Basel where they call it Fastnacht. The celebrations there are very mystical.

Hi Fab,
How wonderful that you have been able to attend Carnevale twice. It’s great to see ancient festivals still resonating with current populations.
Best,
Renee
